About the artist
Ricky Skaggs was born in Kentucky in July, 1954. His father gave him a mandolin
when he was a young child and made his live debut at age six playing with
bluegrass legend Bill Monroe.
As a teenager, he teamed up with Keith Whitley, and the two were eventually
invited to join Ralph Stanley's Clinch Mountain Boys. He played with J.D. Crowe
and the New South and Emmylou Harris' band, before moving to Nashville and
signing with Epic Records.
He released his debut album Waitin for the Sun to Shine in 1981 and made his
Grand Ole Opry debut a year later. His first album with Kentucky Thunder was
1997's Bluegrass Rules, which earned a Grammy for Best Bluegrass Album.
In the years since releasing his debut, Skaggs has earned more than two dozen
awards for his work, including Grammys, CMA Awards, and IBMA Awards (eight
for Instrumental Group of the Year for Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder).
